Starboard Carve 144
Windsport Spring 2006, Issue 109

Starboard designed the Carves to be easy to sad yet provide enough performance to please most windsurfers. The Carve 144 hits the mark with its '06 edition.

The 144 planes up under control, making it perfect for learning how to plane and get into the footstraps. Liking more wind than the other big boards, it makes up for this with stable and comfortable acceleration. Once in the straps, the 144 sails effortlessly. Top speed is attained without trim work, maintaining a ride that is smoother and less directional than the other freerides tested. Preferring an upright, hips-in stance, it asks little of its owner other than to lean back and enjoy the ride.

The 144 stands out when it comes to jibing. It is the easiest board here to initiate and is forgiving to driver error, making it an ideal choice for novice jibers. Unlike most high-volume shortboards, the 144 offers more than just one wide-arcing carve and is capable of being jibed off the back foot.

The 144 comes with a wide swept blade fin that powers up nicely and keeps it under control. Multiple insert positions and domed deck ensure that any rider can find a comfort place to stand.

Anyone in the market for an easy board to ride that still has performance should consider the Carve 144.

Bottom Line: Accessibility, effortless ride, easy jibing.
