STARBOARD Kombat 96 WOOD in German SURF 4/2006
Translated by Chris Pressler

The Starboard Team kept working hard to combat the reproach of last years test, which characterized the board as less motorized.

Despite the well known Starboard cushioning, this years model feels much more loose,

The answer 2006: it?s not a less motorized board anymore! With full steam and best control the Kombat 96 wood fights for the top ranked position in the category "speed".

The upwind qualities are great and the board starts to plan in an excellent way. As well the freestyle qualities have been improved a lot. Excellent all round control (maximum points in the test), an easy surfing factor in the jibe and excellent jumping characteristics encourage the rider to practice classic freestyle moves. If you will not place your feet in an optimised position while doing a backwind jibe for example the board will be a forgiving one. The Kombat is a wide board, which carves soft along the rail through the water. For doing smaller jibes and 360's the pilot has to expand a bit more power and the Starboard will turn willingly. New school moves can be done as well with the same powerful technique. Inside waves some s-turns can be done - but it?s nothing about real waveriding.

Result: A well made and excellent cushioned Freemove board for locations with stronger wind and choppy water. Heavier riders will find a nice compromise in between a move orientated and all-round efficiency.

German Surf-tip: This is the perfect board for riders who like a comfortable board, for locations with stronger wind and choppy water, for sailors who want to improve, for small waves and freestylemoves
