Just curious if anyone knows anything abouth Berky sailboards. I actually found a Berky Aerospoon out at the trash dumpster and it appears to be perfectly intact and in real good condition. It's 8'4" with a rounded low scoop nose, sharp rails, tuttle box. What would be it's exact application and sail range? Thanks! |

All I know is that Berky boards are very fast . At least they were 15 years ago. Good find . Are you in So . Florida? I beleave that Berky Boards were or are made in the Florida keys , maybe Islamarada . Back in the 80's I saw Berky just blow everyone away at some speed trials in Islamarada. on one of those spoon nosed boards . Way ahead of its time. |

Yeah, I'm in Palm beach County...Some one must have been moving and just ditched the board..or a pissed off girlfriend. No fin with it, though. |

yes,
spoon was very fast. hollow maybe
Watched a guy (very good sailor) take off on a Berky 288/6.3 in 9 knots. Hooked'n'Foot in I think the 288 the year it came out was the board to beat. There's still some around, and there still fast. The 288 was fantanstic in light winds.
Berky is in the gorge maybe. Pat L. is still in the Keys last i heard. Wasn't enough $ in it to pay the rent.
Wish those guys would shape some new stuff.

I think they are making composite catamarans last I heard (and that was a few years ago). Sailed a 288 for a while when I lived on the east coast and they were really fast. Jimmy Diaz used to race on them around that time.

Spoon preceded 288 and 295 by at least 3 years. Bud uses the 8'4"er, at 100 or so liters, for his lightwind board. He had ASD copy (don't change a thing) it for a spare. Fits inside his CVCC Honda. Blocky rails, great for flat water and winds around 13-20mph. I had the 8'2"er, with tapered thin rails, best with 6 meter sail and flat water also. OK speed, Priesters were right there, as were HiPerTechs, HiTechs, and a host of other boards. Not talking 288, that board ruled the roost for a couple of years. |

Met and spent a little time with Pat L years ago in Islamorada - staying at The Moorings. He actually showed me the pontoons of a gigantic composite catamaran he was building.
Gotta say that Pat and John Parton from Pro-Tech were real visionaries on board shaping - they were cutting off the tails and moving the fins to the back a long time ago.
Great light very fast boards. Great guys. Wish they were still doing windsurfing - I prefer to buy from people.

About 30-38 fin depending on actual shape. Sail sizing best from 5.5 to 7 meters. A little stiff on shortradius jibes, the board planes early with the blocky rails, go pretty fast, and best in smoother waters....which you get with 7 meter sails....usually. |

Very late reply so I hope you read this....
I have two spoons, a table-spoon (the 2.54m or 8' 4") and a tea spoon at 2.44. They sail in Bonaire on 5.5 and 5.8 m2 camber rigs on 32 cm tuttle fins and the tablespoon takes a 6.3 Naish with ease....
As for speed thety are the fastest thing in Lac Bay (flat water) but watch out if the chop is heavy and don't expect to turn them smoothly...

Chase, Dont' know if you're still in need of information about your Berky. I just bought a used 8'8" in Islamorada (Fla Keys) and sailed it while I was down visitng friends (cheaper to buy and keep down there than rent).
It had FL4 on the side but no other specific information, but I believe it is 130 ltrs of volume, probably a little bigger than yours.
Handles a 7.2 in 15-20 kts very well and I sailed it with a large fin - 52 cm. It's a very fast especially off the wind, goes upwind very well and is easy for jumping but very fragile.
It's a great board but takes a little getting used to for jibing since there's not much volume forward of the mast base.
Good luck and have fun!

Have a Berky 295, and when mated with a 7.0 NP Z-1 and Fox True-Ames weed fin (yes), I don't think I ever got passed. Ever. It's like the board was made for that combo. Wicked fast board. Takes some real practice to jibe, doesn't like hard carves but rather prefers drawn out carves with judicious power from sailing clew-first in the later portion of the jibe. Kinda got in to freestyle since then, but the Berky was my first true-love in sailboards. God bless you, Pat, wherever you are. |
